In response to a request from Mr Hayllar that Janild read over a written Statement by him of Dr Eitel's charges, I wrote as follows,

Road 22nd Sept 1891

My dear Hayllar,

I think the best course would be for you to send your Solicitor to me and instruct him to take down from me a statement of what passed during my interview with Dr Eitel. I would at the same time furnish him with copies of the letters you ask for.

Your obediently,
J. Bullock Johnson

and frequently gave to our Wotton, M = Hayllar's Policeman a detailed account of what passed between Dr Eitel and myself on the 20th September, to the following effect, as copied in the petition in the case of Hayllar: Eitel-

On the 23rd or 29th of August last, in the afternoon, about 5 or 6 o'clock, on my way to a Legislative meeting, proceeding to the Peak, I overtook Mr Rupie and entered into conversation with him. He said to me, "Do you know the origin of the quarrel between the Governor & Hayllar?" I replied, "Yes, I have understood it was a case of interference between husband and wife, in which the interfering party was Grief." I added, "I had also heard that there had been a personal fracas between the Governor & Hayllar, but it was a matter which did not concern me, and I had not taken the trouble to enquire about it." Mr. Rupie said, "He had seen a copy of correspondence between Hayllar and the Secretary of State.
